The basics for New Zealanders
- Schengen allowance: 90 days in any 180-day period across all 29 countries.
- Passport: issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after you leave.
- EES: fingerprints and photo on your first entry; days are counted automatically.
- ETIAS: no start date yet.
Bilateral visa waiver agreements
New Zealand has bilateral visa waiver agreements with a number of Schengen countries. Switzerland, for example, states that its agreement lets New Zealand passport holders stay in Switzerland for up to 90 days irrespective of time already spent in other Schengen countries.
The agreements differ in length and in how they combine with the Schengen allowance, and the list has changed over the years. Check the current list and conditions on SafeTravel and with the embassy of the country concerned, and carry written confirmation: border officials are not always familiar with these agreements.
The calculator counts the standard Schengen 90/180 rule. Plan any time under a bilateral agreement separately.
How to count your days
On every day you are in the Schengen area, count the days you spent there in that day and the 179 days before it. The total must never go above 90. Entry and exit days both count, and days in all 29 countries are added together. The 90180.app calculator does this for every day of every trip, including trips you are only planning, and tells you your latest exit date.
Before you travel, you can confirm with the EU's official EES tool, which uses your border record. It does not include stays that began before 10 April 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Do the bilateral agreements apply to every Schengen country?
No, only to the countries that signed one with New Zealand. Check the current list on SafeTravel.
Do the day I arrive and the day I leave both count?
Yes. Both count as full days, whatever time you cross the border.
Does leaving for a few days reset my 90 days?
No. Days only come back 180 days after you spent them. The calculator shows when.
