The basics
- Which passports: the exemption applies to ordinary Republic of China (Taiwan) passports that include the holder's national ID card number, as both Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the EU office in Taiwan confirm.
- Limit: at most 90 days in total in any 180-day period across the Schengen countries. Cyprus is not part of the Schengen area and is counted separately.
- EES: since 10 April 2026 every entry and exit is recorded with fingerprints and a photo, and the system counts your days automatically.
- ETIAS: Taiwan's ministry notes the system is still being built and that visa-free treatment for Taiwanese travellers stays the same once it starts. There is no official start date.
The ministry recommends a passport with at least six months of validity. The EU requirement is a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for 3 months after you leave; following the longer recommendation does no harm.
How to count your days
On every day you are in the Schengen area, count the days you spent there in that day and the 179 days before it. The total must never go above 90. Entry and exit days both count, and days in all 29 countries are added together. The 90180.app calculator does this for every day of every trip, including trips you are only planning, and tells you your latest exit date.
Before you travel, you can confirm with the EU's official EES tool, which uses your border record. It does not include stays that began before 10 April 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Does time in Cyprus count?
No. Cyprus is an EU country but not part of the Schengen area, so it has its own count.
Do the day I arrive and the day I leave both count?
Yes. Both count as full days, whatever time you cross the border.
Does leaving for a few days reset my 90 days?
No. Days only come back 180 days after you spent them. The calculator shows when.
